Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Officially named Rokuon-ji, it was originally built in 1397 as the retirement villa of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and later became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect. The pavilion’s top two stories are covered in gold leaf, and the building is reflected in the surrounding Kyōko-chi (Mirror Pond). The current structure was rebuilt in 1955 after a fire in 1950.
